PANAMA. The ratification of a decree that allows the president judge of the Supreme Court to suspend court officers who commit disciplinary and offences has created a lot of controversy.

However, the president judge, Harley Mitchell is convinced that it would be to the benefit of the country that the decree becomes law.

Thanks to the decree, Mitchell was permitted to order the legal audits that have resulted in the suspension of four judges.

Mitchell is studying the possibility of presenting the decree to the National Assembly with the intention of it becoming law.

The anti-corruption bill has 55 articles that are aiming to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate corruption from the legal system. The idea is to avoid the incidents that happened in 2005 when judges started to accused each other of corruption.

In order to be able to present the bill to the National Assembly, Mitchell will have to obtain the support of the other eight members of the Supreme Court.

Only high judges, Esmeralda de Troitiño and Victor Benavides have signed the decree. The rest of the supreme judges have remained silent and nobody really knows what they think about it.
