PANAMA. Compulsive gamblers will receive help through an innovative rehabilitation program offered by the National Institute of Mental Health INSAM (Instituto de Salud Mental) and the Association of Administrators of Games of Chance ASAJA (Asociacion de Administradores de Juegos de Azar).
The rehabilitation session will have a duration of 40 weeks and will consist of group therapy, individual and family sessions and music therapy among other approaches in order to help individuals get over their gambling addiction.
It will be an outpatient therapy that will allow the person to carry on with his normal life without compromising his rehabilitation.
Those who are taking part in the program will have the option to provide photographs of themselves which will be circulated within the gambling establishments and if the addict decides to go to a casino, the person will not be permitted to play, as a way to keep them away from temptation.
The rehabilitation program is voluntary and is managed by the Center for the Study and Treatment of Addictions CETA, which is the only government run research center for the investigation and treatment of the addictions.
Currently the center gives treatment to 800 people in its rehabilitation programs, that cover all types of addictions.
It is estimated that around 30,000 people are addicted to gambling in Panama and the games of chance have increased 87 percent since 1999.
In 2006 $767.6 million was generated by the gambling industry.
